NewsHigh Level Partnership Lunch 6 Press Release - [24-10-2006]PRESS RELEASE MONDAY 23 OCTOBER 2006 Subject: BEDFORDSHIRE’S TWO UNIVERSITIES WORKING TOGETHER Bedfordshire’s two universities are working together for the benefit of the local economy. This was shown at the High Level Partnership Lunch on 20 October when Professor Les Ebdon, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Bedfordshire, and Professor Clifford Friend, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Cranfield University showed how their activities complement each other and assist local businesses directly.
Derek Ludlow (Chairman of BLEDP) said “the Bedfordshire and Luton area is very fortunate to have two universities with such complementary qualities. The benefits to the local economy of their willingness to work together and with the wider business support community is there for all to see.

Professor Ebdon said “I am delighted to be given this opportunity to speak to this important gathering of local decision makers and receive their support. The following statistics illustrate the benefits to the region that the University of Bedfordshire brings. An income of £82.4m, a staff of 1080, help to 5,500 SMEs, and a contribution of £163m to the local economy.”
Professor Clifford Friend spoke of the uniqueness of Cranfield, saying “Many have heard of Cranfield University, but few know of its distinctiveness. Through its technology park and international research and education programmes, this commercially focused research-intensive postgraduate university enhances the local economy through strong interactions with regional companies and by bringing international commercial partners to Cranfield. It even has its own airport, increasingly a business aviation portal to the East Midlands and East of England. Truly a different type of university and probably the Region’s Best Kept Secret!”
