PRESS RELEASE - MONDAY 19 JUNE 2006

LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY SUPPORTS CENTER PARCS DEVELOPMENT PLANS

At a High Level Partnership Lunch on Friday 16 June an audience of prominent businessmen and women expressed their support for the Center Parcs development currently under consideration for Warren Wood, Bedfordshire.

The lunch, hosted by BLEDP in conjunction with The Chamber, and attended by representatives from the local business community and local authorities, heard a presentation by Martin Dalby (Chief Executive) and Don Camilleri (Development Director) of Center Parcs.    The plans they outlined in the presentation, and in subsequent discussion, were well received and the project welcomed as a means of providing a much needed boost to the local economy.

Key facts affecting the economic development of the region:

  • The development will generate at least 1500 jobs within the centre itself, with a full time equivalent of 950.
  • The building of the Center Parcs village will take 18 months and will also create a significant number of construction jobs (over 530).
  • Many of those new jobs will go to young people which will help to achieve the substantial and challenging governmental employment targets for the area of 19,800 new jobs for the period up to 2021.
  • It has been calculated that the development will lead to the injection of up to £40 million into the economy of Bedfordshire and Luton in the construction phase, and that each year, once the development has been completed, there will be an injection of over £16 million of investment and economic benefits generally within a 20 mile radius.
  • It will develop the existing tourism market in Bedfordshire and Luton and raise the area’s profile and identity with visitors, and potential future inward investors.
  • It is estimated that over 300,000 visitors would be attracted into the county.
