NIRAH - Transformation for the Clay Pits of Mid Beds - [24-02-2006]

This is how the £375 Million Nirah complex will transform a clay pit in Mid Bedfordshire.
The sweeping bio-canopy will create an image of cloud layers over the fresh water sanctuary which will house threatened species of fish and amphibeans from Africa, Asia and the Amazon. The tropical biotope will house two tanks each holding one million gallons of fresh water. The ground area covered by the biotope will equal four football pitches. To the right of the tropical biotope will be a cloud-canopied water adventure park and an outside natural swimming pool.
Around it will be a landscaped parkland of 20 acres which will include:
- outdoor temperate freshwater habitats.
- four acres of formal water gardens
- the largest water fountain in the world set in an area the size of Trafalgar Square
Project Director Ronnie Murning’s vision for Nirah is that it: “Promotes understanding of the connection between fresh water and life.” Mr Murning worked with architects Grimshaw on the world-famous Eden Project. He and Grimshaw’s Director Jolyon Brewis say Nirah will be unique in its concept.
